OUR STORY
Kennedy's started as one bar on Greenwood Street and a belief that Altrincham deserved a proper home away from home, somewhere with authentic Irish hospitality, a great atmosphere and a night out to reminisce about. Five years on, we've grown into two bars, two communities and a reputation people now travel across Greater Manchester and beyond for.
ALTRINCHAM BEGINNINGS
John Kennedy opened Kennedy's in Altrincham in 2021, while most of the trade was still trying to work out if it would survive the year.
His parents had come to Manchester from Ireland, his mother from Galway, and growing up between the two cultures gave him a clear idea of what a proper Irish bar should feel like. So, no themes, no gimmicks, just somewhere honest, well run and welcoming.
Altrincham already had its pubs but what it didn't have was what Kennedy's was built on.
A PROPER NIGHT OUT
Walk into Kennedy's and the atmosphere hits you before anything else does, the music, the feel, the sense that everyone's welcome and Irish hospitality done properly.
That's what people keep coming back for. Of course, a night out here isn't complete without a proper pint of Guinness, and that means getting the basics right: the cellar, kit and staff who do the two-part pour properly every single time. It's one part of a much bigger picture, but it's one of the parts people notice first.
GROWING GREENWOOD STREET
Kennedy's needed more room within two years. In 2023 the Altrincham site expanded next door, added an Irish deli and later the Airbnb above the bar for those making a proper night of it.
And in 2025, the demand had outgrown one postcode entirely. Kennedy's Didsbury opened on Wilmslow Road, bringing the same music, the same craic and the same hospitality to a part of Manchester with its own strong Irish community.
RECOGNITION WE DIDN'T LOOK FOR
2026 brought amazing news the team didn't see coming. Kennedy's Didsbury was named in the inaugural Guinness Harp Guide, one of only 35 pubs in the UK to make the list, and shortlisted for Best Town Pub at the Great British Pub Awards.
Kennedy's Altrincham was featured in CAMRA's Manchester's Best Beer Pubs and Bars guide. Neither bar was built to win awards. They were built to be good, consistently, night after night, and the recognition followed on its own.
